Les made over 700 League appearances for various clubs but never got the chance to play in the highest division. In July 1985 he became player-manager of Stockport County but moved on a year later to become player-assistant manager at Preston. In April 1990 he took over the managership of the club himself and joined City's staff in January 1993.
Replaced by Kevin Bond in July 1996.
