Malcolm Allison will forever be remembered for his contribution to the greatest times with Manchester City, but not as manager, but as the brilliant Coach under Joe Mercer.

Allison served City as Manager twice: 1971-73 and 1979-80. Both spells were brief and neither of the especially successful. The first was tampered by him living in the long shadows of Joe Mercer after the departure of the brilliant manager that had won City everything between 1968 and 71. During his second spell he almost broke the bank with his immaculate tranfer dealings. Out went popular faces like Brian Kidd, Dave Watson, Gary Owen, Peter Barnes, Kenny Clements and Asa Hartford. And the youngsters he brought in could not stand the pressure.

In January 1980 City were humiliated at Halifax and in October Allison and Book were dismissed by Swales. Allison was angry with the sacking and believed he should have been given more time to turn things around. The thruth was that Swales could no longer handle the big wages and spendings that Allison was demanding.

After City Allison went on to manage a number of clubs both on national and internationale level. Most exotic were perhaps the national posts at Kuwait and Turkey, but his greatest moments as manager came with Sporting Lisbon in 1981/82 when he led them victory in both the Portuguese League and Cup.
