Truly an amazing man. Francis Lee, once the heartbeat of the City attack, a great footballer, goalscorer and businessman. Although not at the same time, that is. Lee made 321 appearances for Manchester City, scoring 143 goals. He enjoyed all the great moments, winning the championship, cups, charity shield and the European Cup Winners Cup. He also gained a regular place in the England squad, and many fans may remember the famous; "with Bell and Lee and Summerbee" chants.
Not all moments on the pitch is worth bragging about. But Lee always put his heart in it. Famous for tumbling and going for penalties, but perhaps better known for his ability from the spot, holding the league record with 11 pens executed in one season. Only one of them awarded by a foul on himself. He also showed his fighting spirit, standing up against the (much) taller Norman Hunter in an infamous rumble - two rounds of fist fighting, The second after being sent off. This was however after he had left City for Derby, one of his saddest memories from the pitch. Lee never spoke ill about the blues. Opposed to so many former crowd favourites who have slagged off against the club and fans in the press lately. After leaving the club his only annoyance was that he might have won us that second title if he had stayed, instead of the Rams.
So 20 years later he returns, this time as a successful businessman, racehorse owner and trainer. His fortune built on hard work rather than cheer luck. But this time he lets his heart do the betting, and not his brain. Because it's not easy to become prophet in your own county. He explains how regret and frustration has overwhelmed him after his return. And after showing not so great judgement in quite a few cases (Ball say no more), it's easy to understand him. But he should know that we - the fans - do understand. Because we too judge by heart rather than brains, and love our heros, 'coz being a true blue is what really matters, isn't it?
Please give us that second title this time Francis!
