For those who have never laid eyes on a handbook, it's basically an
introduction to the new season combined with a review of the old season
(91-92) and also provides plenty of information both in the form of
addresses and as club statistics. The book is soft-backed, comprises 130
pages, and has numerous photos & adverts, the latter probably necessary to
keep the price so low. The foreword is from that man Swales and includes
the memorable line "...this could be our year to emerge as a formidable
team..." (OK, it's easy to laugh with hindsight I know!). After a page from
the manager (Peter Reid) we get a description of the support staff amongst
whom were of course Tony Book and Colin Bell, then the pre-season
friendlies and on to a description plus photo of each of the current
playing staff. I was stunned to see that Paul Lake played in the tour of
Italy and scored against both Cremonese and Brescia, his profile talks of a
full recovery in 92-93. Just what has happened to him? I know he's still
part of the squad, he was tipped for greatness and showed all the signs of
getting there 'til his tragic injury.
After a match by match analysis of the entire 91-92 season we move on to
Player of the Year, Tony Coton. We also get an article and artist's
impression of the new Kippax stand, probably this has changed since (?), a
reasonably long look at the period 1980-85 by John Maddocks (official
historian/statistician), a profile of the careers of Don Revie & Tony Book
and finally a quite extensive statistical section. Nothing to say really
other than good value for money if you feel incomplete without a handbook
for the new season!
All the above are my own personal opinions
