Irish international Terry Phelan, once was Britains most expensive defender, when City paid Wimbledon 2.5M in 1992. Enjoyed a regular place in the World Cup finals in the U.S, but had problems convincing the City-fans with his defending abilities, despite being one of the fastest runners in the team. Eventually he lost his place in the team, and were transferred to Chelsea for no more than 1/3 of the fee that brought him to Maine Road.
