Barry is from County Monaghan in the Republic of Ireland. He spent 2 seasons at QPR who released him in May. He then moved on trial to Middlesbrough who couldn't agree personal terms with him. City stepped in and agreed personal terms!

Barry's hat-trick in a play off against Norway last May (after his QPR release) secured qualification for the Republic of Ireland U-18's in the European Championship finals. Barry scored the winner against Switzerland in the finals but was sent off soon afterwards which ruled him out of the rest of the tournament.

Barry was named in the Republic of Ireland U-21 squad by Ian Evans and also named as one of three nominees for Youths Player of the Year in the Football Association of Ireland Opel International Awards for 1997.
