On a hectic 3 August 2007 Vedran Corluka joined Manchester City in what became known as a triple signing spree that also saw Elano Blumer and Javier Garrido join the Premiership club the same day. The young and tall Croatian defender signed a 5 year deal and moved from Croatian top-club Dinamo Zagreb in a deal believed to be worth £7m depending on the number of performances.

Corluka was born in Modran, small village near Derventa, Bosnia and Herzegovina, then Yugoslavia. His professional career started with Capital team Dinamo Zagreb in 2003 before he at the age of 18 was farmed out on loan to Inter Zaprešic in 2004. During his one year loan spell he helped bring the small suburban team to 2nd place in the league. He returned to Dinamo Zagreb in 2005 and went on to win the Croatian League both in 2006 and 2007, as well as the Croatian Cup and Super-cup in 2007.

Corluka is capped at Croatian U-21 level, and made his debut at A-level in an away friendly in Livorno against Italy on August 16, 2006. He came on as a second half substitute and satisfied the critics with his very good, solid performance against experienced Serie A forwards. Croatia eventually won the match 2-0. He also played a cracking game against Peter Crouch and England in October 2006 when Croatia won 2-0 in Zagreb.

Corlukas obvious strength is in the air. At 191 cm he must be regarded as a very tall footballer (Peter Crouch is 198 cm). He's proved to be a very strong player at set pieces like free-kicks and corners. He also posesses great coordination, technique and positioning. He often goes forward, and can double as a right wingback if the team is trailing by a goal.
